Sampling

Sample area Nationwide
Sample population 922 individuals who agreed to participate to the follow-up survey, out of the 2,727 respondents for the JGSS-2009LCS.

*Sample population for the JGSS-2009LCS was men and women 28 to 42 years of age living in Japan as of December 31, 2008. (Two-stage stratified random sampling; stratified by regional block and population size)
Sample size 922
Sampling method Follow-up survey to the JGSS-2009LCS
Sample population for the JGSS-2013LCSwave2 was those who completed JGSS-2009LCS and who agreed to participate to follow-up surveys (922 individuals 32 to 46 years of age as of December 31, 2012).
While conducting back-checks with respondents in May 2009, respondents were asked whether or not they would be willing to participate to the follow-up surveys. Respondents who did not give any answer on the follow-up survey were contacted again in July 2009.
The research team maintained contact with respondents who agreed to participate to the follow-up survey to keep their addresses updated. The valid responses for the JGSS-2013LCSwave2 was 718, and of those 112 respondents had address changed since the 2009 survey.

Administration

JGSS-20013 LCS was conducted from February through March 2013. The fieldwork was entrusted to the Central Research Services Inc. (Chuo-Chosa-sha).
Respondents received a pre-announcement letter for the survey in January, and a self-administered questionnaire was mailed out in February. Face to face interviews were then conducted, and interviews also collected the self-administered questionnaires.
For practical reasons, the administrative order (i.e., whether to conduct the face-to-face interview before or after the questionnaire) was determined by the interviewer/administrator depending on the circumstances of each case.
