In an arena of cross-national surveys in which European and American researchers tend to be the focus, the EASS (East Asian Social Survey) project establishes common questions based on issues and concerns unique to East Asian societies, and attempts to conduct cross-national analyses.
Since the event that gave momentum to the EASS project was the "JGSS International Symposium 2003" held in Osaka University of Commerce in June, 2003, the JGSS project has been deeply involved in its start-up and operation. The constituent teams that launched the EASS were the JGSS team; Taiwanese team, which has been conducting a survey modeled after the GSS for many years (the Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica); and Korean team who started in 2003 (the Survey Research Center (SRC), Sungkyunkwan University). Chinese team which started in 2003 (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Renmin University of China) has participated the EASS later.
Methodological feature of the EASS project is to incorporate these modules into repeated social surveys already implemented in various countries and regions, and to make international comparisons, rather than create a new independent cross-national survey. It is planned to incorporate groups of common questions (modules) every two years starting in 2006. EASS aims to continue valid and reliable cross-national surveys by using repeated research that has already generated robust results.
The theme for the first EASS (EASS 2006) is Family. The JGSS also calls for questions for the EASS module in and outside Japan, and four researchers joined the project. The EASS project team conducted several meetings at Seoul, Taipei, Beijing, and Osaka, and had completed the EASS 2006 module. EASS 2006 dataset is now released through ICPSR at the University of Michigan as well as EASSDA (EASS Data Archive) EASS 2008 and EASS 2010 datasets will be available through ICPSR in series.
The theme for the second (EASS 2008), third (EASS 2010), and fourth (EASS 2012) survey is "Culture and Globalization in East Asia," “Health and Society in East Asia,” and “Network Social Capital in East Asia,” respectively.
