Awards Granted to the JGSS Project

On November 28, 2003 the JGSS project was granted the 2003 Statistical Activity Encouraging Award by the Japan Statistical Association. That award was established by the Japan Statistical Association (http://www.jstat.or.jp/) in 1999 to encourage positive efforts in activities related to statistics, and to to make great contributions to the progress and expansion of statistics in Japan. The award honors people and organizations that are recognized to have actively engaged in pioneering activities, and through the activities making the improvement and advancement of statistics.

In July 2007, JGSS was presented yet again with a testimonial of appreciation for its development of secondary analysis from the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Social Science. Use of JGSS data is growing year by year both in and outside of Japan. Analyses of JGSS data have been made public in the form of books, research papers, scholarly reports, white papers, and other publications, and are facilitating many brilliant research findings.

These awards are thought of as acknowledgement that the significance and results of the JGSS project, which continually implements comprehensive social surveys and makes its data widely available to researchers, contributes to the development of social science research in Japan while promoting the effective utilization of precious statistical resources, and the award includes the wish that the JGSS will continue its activities in the future.

The JGSS Project Evaluation System

In addition to receiving interim and post-evaluations from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, the JGSS project also periodically arranges for opportunities to receive internal and external evaluation regarding the contents, progress, and planning of the project, and makes proactive efforts to improve the project. The holding of statistical analysis seminars, establishing of the Researcher Encouraging Program for graduate students, and other activities represent consideration of the advice of the evaluation committee and incorporation into the project.
